Billet Families

Billet families play a significant role in the lives of London Lakers players. Many local families open their homes and personal lives to our players each season and partake in the vast array of festivities throughout the year. Billet families work hard to ensure that our players integrate into the community smoothly and comfortably while reducing the stress of moving to a new city and being away from their family. This translates into hard work, dedication, and success on the ice, both at games and at practices.

Our players are between the ages of 16 and 21 and billet families play a critical role in their growth and development. Players are expected to show the utmost respect to their host family and we ask that our players be treated like any other member of the billet family. It is important that the player respect the rules of the host family and the host family respect the rules of the hockey club. The values and principles for success that are essential to become a member of the London Lakers will be demanded at the rink, in the home, in the community and in school. It is imperative that the player and the billet family maintain a mutually respectful relationship. The hockey club promotes open communication among the billet family, team staff, the player and the player’s family.

The London Lakers could not operate without the support of so many great billet families in our community. There are many benefits to becoming a billet family, which includes two tickets to each home game (4 tickets if there are two players) and remuneration per month for each player. You will also receive invitations to exclusive team events as well as a 20% discount off all regularly priced London Lakers merchandise. These perks however do not equal the overwhelming joy a family receives from playing a part in the life of a fine young man who is continuing to reach for his dream of developing into the best player and person he can be.

When applying to become a billet family, a member of the London Lakers Management will visit the prospective billet’s home and meets with all members of the family to answer any of their questions/concerns. Only once the home visit is complete and a Police Background Check is done on every adult living in the home, can a family be considered a prospective billet. The biggest factor is to ensure that the player and the billet are well matched, so the transition from home to billet-home is smooth.

Billeting can be a very exciting and rewarding experience for all those willing to open their homes to dedicated players. Many families who have billeted in the past usually look back at their experience with fond memories. In fact, many families still stay in touch with players they had billeted in the past as those same players move through the next phases of their hockey careers.

Regular visits to all billet family homes will be made by team staff. Should a member of the London Lakers staff deem a player is not contributing to the cleanliness and upkeep of their living arrangement, a warning may be delivered, followed by the London Lakers hiring cleaning services, at the players’ expense. This will result in removal from the active roster until the expense is paid.

We will have team guidelines and policies that the players must follow that will be shared should you become a billet home.
